My College Love

This first post is dedicated to my mother, Ms. Priscilla Jackson, whom I launched this website on her birthday (today, February 2nd). “We are confident, I say and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to present with the Lord.” - 2 Corinthians 5:8. RIP Mom!

My love for college rather than my college love (did you see what I did there? I fooled you!) began at a very young age. I grew up watching A LOT OF TV!!! Maybe even too much! But one of my favorite TV shows was “A Different World!” This show basically instilled in me that after high school, I was going to go to college. I didn’t have real intentions of attending an HBCU (I am glad I did though!), but I knew I was going to college. One of my favorite episodes was when… geez there are a lot of episodes that are my favorite lol! But Season 2 Episode 7 titled “A Stepping Stone” was my favorite episode. This episode explored the annual dorm step show competition (which are THEE BEST!) at Hillman College. It displayed competitiveness, helping others and just plain fun! Everything about it was a great episode to me. Now that I am older, it is still one of my favorite episodes, but I have a new favorite episode (and yes, I still watch this show until this very day!), Season 6 Episode 23 titled “Homie Don’t Ya Know me?” This episode is most commonly referred to as “the Tupac episode” lol. Yes, I am a fan of Tupac, however this episode had a deeper meaning to it. It was about leaving your friends behind to get further in life (i.e., attending college) while some of your friends may have another route. It is a hard decision to leave and meet new people that help you to evolve versus staying with what you know and are comfortable with. But it is a life-changing decision that some believe will put you in a better position. A position to win!

Often times when I am working with youth, there are a lot of scholars who like to remain close to home because of FOMO (fear of missing out). It is like pulling teeth to get scholars to apply or even leave within a 200 mile radius from their home. Some may not be ready to leave just yet, but it is important to keep an open mind! The key takeaway from that episode is to keep an open mind and to know that some people really do grow apart! You will not always have a BFF for life! In the end, you may have you to depend on!

To wrap this up , the show had so many great lessons learned and was extremely entertaining. I admit, I still watch this show as if it is a new episode every time and laugh at the same jokes ten times harder! Check these episodes out, they won’t disappoint you.

Please be sure to keep up with me on all social media platforms (IG, FB, & Twitter) as I post scholarships and helpful tips everyday! I will be doing SOME blogging, but I can’t promise no more than 3-4x per month. Stay tuned!
